News and Articles
Dear Friends,
I have decided to produce the News Bulletin to coincide with the AGM and give an update for the year 2010-2011.
This year sees the tenth anniversary of AFFECT and is a time to reflect on the achievements of the organisation.
As many people know, AFFECT is the brain child of four Founder Members all of whom had the experience of a loved one in prison. From this vision has sprung an organisation that is becoming known throughout the country. We are growing slowly but surely, and are recognised by many agencies who make referrals to us.
Our numbers are growing and we have dedicated volunteers as Counsellors, Supporters, Listeners, Befrienders and Trustees.
For the last two years there has not been a Founder member on the Board of Trustees and recently a volunteer has taken on the role of Volunteer Co-ordinator and a newly qualified Counsellor who did her practical work with us is supervising the Supporters, Listeners and Befrienders, an indication that members are beginning to own the organisation.
It goes without saying that any charity cannot function without an income and we have found that recently our outgoings are greater than our income and we would ask you to let us know of any fundraising ideas you have. We apply for grants but in the current climate we need to prove our worth by demonstrating our outcomes and again we would urge you give us feedback, in writing about how AFFECT has helped you. If you would like to collect your small change for AFFECT please let me know and we can provide a money box for you. All contributions are very welcome. The Counsellors, Supporters, Listeners and Befrienders continue to do sterling work, all on a voluntary basis. The Trustees meet regularly to discuss the day to day running. I am particularly grateful to Sister Mary Joy and Trish Dickens as “acting” Secretary and Treasurer for all their hard work. I have been invited to give presentations to several agencies and it is good to get our message “out there”. One of our volunteers represented AFFECT at a flower planting ceremony in Havant to celebrate the work of volunteers in that area. It was a very good afternoon with representatives from many voluntary bodies. Stephen and Tricia continue their dedicated work as Counsellors, Trainers, Supervisor and valued advisors. We thank them for their continued support and wisdom. We recently recruited a new volunteer, Trudy King, and look forward to working with her. Sharon Allison (Wallace), who was one of our volunteers, is now employed as the Family Visits Coordinator at HMP Kingston and we thank her for the time she has spent working with AFFECT.
We will be holding interviews for volunteers in November and several training days are planned, including Court Support and Telephone Skills. If you are interested please contact us.
